Description
It has long been thought that Boxers are a breed that have been bred down by a German breed called the Bullenbeisser (“bull biter”). During the medieval times the Bullenbeisser was Germany’s premier big-game hunter, used by noblemen to run down, catch, and hold such formidable opponents as bear, bison, and wild boar. The war dogs of the Assyrian empire are also ancestors of the Boxer breed.
The Boxer was named for its manner of “boxing” with its sturdy front paws when fighting. It is a large and muscular working dog breed with a square head. These dogs have a short glossy soft coat—usually a fawn, brindle, or white color—with flecks of white across the chest, face, and paws.
Boxers make great family pets. They are naturally friendly, upbeat, and playful. Since they have a lot of energy, they need plenty of exercise. Their patience and protective nature have earned them a reputation for being great with children. They reach full maturity in three years, which is longer than other dog breeds. These loyal, affectionate, intelligent, dogs are easy to groom and easy to love.
